Biography
Ted Camat has been studying the drums for sixteen years and has eight years of music teaching experience. His formal training began with the percussion program of Wells Middle School in Houston. He continued music education in school, working his way up to Snare Captain at Westfield High School. After graduating, he further refined his rudimental technique with Cavaliers Snareline alumnus Devon Winegar. Mr. Camat continued his training at Houston Community College where he earned a degree in Music Business and Music Performance - Jazz Studies in 2008. He received HCC's "Outstanding Achievement Award" and, upon graduation, was asked to return to Houston Community College to work as assistant Jazz Band Director.
In Houston, he learned linear funk and New Orleans street beats from Michael "Nuje" Blattel (Drop Trio, Pro Music Instruction - Woodlands) and soon began jazz studies under the direction of Joe LoCascio, Woody Witt and Johnny Vidacovich. Over the next several years, he studied with Sebastian Whittaker and Tim Solook along with extracurricular studies in jazz piano, guitar, and more extensively, voice. Taking private lessons with some of Houston's finest coupled with formal training he received from the music programs in school provided Teddy the background needed to succeed as a working drummer and educator throughout the Houston area. Mr. Camat has taught professionally at Fort Bend Music Center (Sugarland, TX), All About Music & Arts (Cypress, TX) and Houston Community College.
Since relocating to Austin in 2010, Ted embraced the Brazilian music scene and studied caixa, repinique, surdo and tamborim rhythms with the "Academicos da Opera," also known as the Austin Samba School. Over the past two seasons, he has performed at various parades and festivals with the school, including the annual Carnival Brasileiro. Teddy has recording credits on CDs produced by Sugarhill Studios of Houston and Premium Recording Service of Austin. He currently tours locally with his Latin-Reggae band Ex Machina.
Mr. Camat accepts ages eight through adult and teaches in-home lessons in Austin, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Leander, and Round Rock.
